The Process of Branding
There is a lot of process that goes into creating a logo (or any design for that matter).
I started the project with research- photos of braces, other dentists’ logos. Dr. Peterson said one of his objectives for the logo was to have it capture a “mountain town feel” I thought an aspen leaf might be a safe concept to run with. During my research I also did preliminary sketches, and finally roughs for my three best ideas. My concept for the leaf was for it to be clean, modern, and show precision: all things appropriate for the orthodontist.
A comp (for those who don’t know design speak) is a mock-up, usually computer-generated. After presenting this comp to the class, we decided it needed some revisions, a different type treatment, as well as an organic element inside the geometric design. The final design looks a little different than what I imagined earlier, but again it is a more conservative, safe, choice and I think the revisions made it more successful. The immediate material we are providing is a letterhead. so I also showed some samples of what that may look like. We will wait until the client makes a decision to continue with a business card ad possibly web graphics.

The Visual Design Lab is a student-run graphic design studio supervised by highly qualified faculty in the Visual Communication Program at Northern Arizona University. The Visual Design Lab is a space for collaboration, where students integrate theory and practice in an experiential learning environment.
Students benefit from applied experiences and clients gain the services of professional designers in-training. The faculty provides structure and assures the quality of the work delivered. We work on a very small budget and charge reasonable fees for the work produced.
